Mirabelle Ang’s love for storytelling began at a young age in her grandparent’s living room, where she was introduced to movies of different genres and languages. She received her early film education at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, in the Department of Film and Media Studies, and graduated with a Diploma in Film, Sound & Video. Drawn to stories that examine class struggles and societal issues, Mirabelle began to work in the documentary genre.
Her first project saw her traveling with a Teochew street opera troupe across Singapore in their final months of performances. Mirabelle received both her Bachelor and Master of Fine Arts at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), where she studied under filmmakers and artists such as Rebecca Baron, James Benning, Hartmut Bitomsky, Bérénice Reynaud and Allen Sekula. At CalArts, Mirabelle continued to broaden her knowledge and craft in documentary filmmaking, while exploring conceptual art through video installations. Her work has screened at international film festivals and museums such as the Viennale, Cinema du Reel, Mar del Plata, Full Frame and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).
Through cinema, Mirabelle got a glimpse of diverse cultures and people of different backgrounds that fueled her curiosity in life. She believes that stories can advance greater understanding of differences across sectors of society. Her video works focus on deliberations over answers. Mirabelle has lived and worked in the United States and Taiwan. In 2018, she returned to Singapore and co-founded Square Root Productions.
